We came to New York for my father-in-law's funeral.
We arrived before noon and rooms were available, but I had to pay $100 in order to check in early. I think this is an egregious policy but paid the $100 because I didn't want to try to find something for my grieving family to do for the next 4 hours on the streets of New York. Once I agreed to the fee, you couldn't get me into my room because the keys didn't work. I had to come down to the lobby twice to try to get the keys corrected, only to find out that the battery was dead in the room lock. I was finally told by the front desk to go to the security desk and ask for help, but no one was there. Eventually, a door man asked why I was waiting there, and he called the security man on the phone. I had to go back upstairs and wait outside the room for a security man to come up and change the battery in the lock. He had to try three times since the first two new batteries he put into the lock were also dead.
After we finally got into the room, we found that the phone didn't work. We needed a few things from housekeeping and called the hotel on my cell phone from the room.
Also, the room needed serious updating. The bathroom, for example, was from the 1980's
