Indianapolis is built on the banks of the White River. A great way to experience the town is to follow the river. Start at the Indianapolis Zoo, which is just southwest of Downtown and adjacent to White River State Park. From there, follow the pedestrian canal walk east to the NCAA Hall of Champions Museum, the Eiteljorg Museum and on into the heart of Downtown Indy. There are gondola rides available on the canal for those who'd rather float than stroll. Three miles north of the river is the Indianapolis Museum of Art, featuring the 100 Acres, an outdoor contemporary art walk in a protected marshland along the river. Just north of the IMA are the beautifully landscaped gardens of Butler University. From there, a walking and biking path leads to the Village of Broad Ripple, a riverside community full of historic houses, sidewalk cafes, music joints and independent boutiques.

Bus and rental car services into the city are available from Indianapolis International Airport (IND). The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indy 500, is the biggest single day sporting event in the world. Tours that take you around the track are available every day except when the track is being used, weather permitting.
