The Flight from Toronto to Vancouver
It took Scottish explorer Alexander Mackenzie several years and two attempts to cross Canada, eventually making it to the Pacific coast in 1793. Nowadays it only takes a matter of hours to fly from Toronto to Vancouver.
The flight takes just over five hours. The distance between the two cities is just over 2,000 miles, but the jets do not always fly in a straight line, the route they take depends on the type of aircraft and the weather conditions. After taking off from Toronto your jet will head over the Great Lakes. Some flights will head north of Winnipeg and Calgary before crossing the Great Divide and coming in to land at Vancouver from the north, others will fly over the USA and approach Vancouver from Washington.
Speed and altitude depend on the type of plane. Boeing 787 Dreamliners can reach speeds of 550mph and fly at 40,000 feet, other aircraft are slower and fly at around 32,000 feet. The flight time is similar whichever type of aircraft you take.
Although the flight from Toronto to Vancouver is domestic it pays to be at the airport well in advance, and you should check in at least an hour before your scheduled departure time. You will also need some form of government ID to board your flight. Non-Canadian citizens should take their passports.
Getting to Toronto Pearson International, located 14 miles northwest of downtown, is easy. There are trains, buses, cabs and plenty of parking. The airport has dozens of shops and restaurants where you can relax before your flight. Remember, that as the flight takes several hours you are likely to be fed on board – you can check if meals are included when you book your flight.
When you arrive at Vancouver you will need to put your watch back three hours. The airport has a visitor information center and there is an impressive aboriginal art collection in the arrivals hall. It is easy to get from the airport to the city center. There is a rapid transit rail link, downtown shuttle services, cabs and rental car facilities. You can reserve a hire car online when you book your flight with Orbitz.
