Traveling to Montego Bay
Montego Bay is the second largest city in Jamaica, and it is a major vacation destination in the Caribbean due to its many resorts and hotels and its lovely beaches along the Jamaican coast. It also functions as a cruise line terminal. Cheap flights to Montego Bay are available through Orbitz.com, and while reserving your flight, you can also look at a list of the hotels rooms available in order to find the best deals.
Flying to Sangster International Airport
The resorts and hotels of Montego Bay are serviced by Sangster International Airport, located about 3 miles from the center of the city. The airport is named after the second Prime Minister of the island. Travel methods from the airport to the accommodations scattered around the area include taxis, rental cars and hotel shuttles. The hotel shuttles are free to use and can be found at your hotel's individual lounge, located in the airport terminal. The car rental desks are in the Arrivals Hall and services include Hertz, Budget, Avis, Thrifty and Island Car Rental. The cost of renting a car begins at about $37 for a daily rate or $220 for weekly rates. Taxis are available from the airport using either JUTA or JCAL taxis. You can book a taxi from the Authorized Airport Taxi desk, situated just as you exit customs. Trip times vary according to the location of your resort or hotel.
Experiencing Montego Bay
Montego Bay experiences a beautiful Caribbean climate throughout the year, with average highs ranging from 84°F to 90°F and an average low of about 71°F. The best time to visit the island is during the months of October through mid-December, in order to enjoy the warm weather while missing the high costs associated with the peak travel season that begins in January. There is an increase in rain during this time of year though, with a small chance of hurricanes. However, as soon as you see the incredible sandy beaches and clear blue waters of the Montego Bay area, hurricanes are likely to be the last thing on your mind. There's more to the Bay than the beaches though. There's delicious food at the Montego Bay Yacht Club, golf at the tropical Cinnamon Hill Golf Course, shopping in the small shops along Gloucester Avenue and haggling for homemade crafts in the market on Harbour Street, among many other available attractions.
Your Trip to Montego Bay
Cheap flights to Montego Bay are plentiful through Orbitz.com. After your arrival, you'll have the trip of a lifetime in a Caribbean paradise, complete with pristine beaches, warm waters, great food, delicious rum and elite accommodations.
Montego Bay When to Go
The most popular and expensive time to visit Montego Bay is during high season, from December to April. Holidays like Christmas, Easter, and spring break draw the most crowds, but the impeccable weather is a draw all its own. From January to March, rainfall is at its lowest, and average highs reach 86 degrees. Montego Bay also boasts a smattering of travel-worthy festivals across high season, including the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival with concerts at Rose Hall in late January, the annual Bob Marley Birthday Bash concert in February, and Montego Bay Yacht Club’s four-day Easter Regatta.
If you don’t mind a little summer heat, you’ll find reduced rates during Mo Bay’s shoulder season from mid-June to late August. July and August are typically the hottest months of the year, though average daily temperatures are only around 90 degrees. Even better is the evening cool-down that whisks through the resort area, dropping the average low to 73 degrees. July borders on peak season as reggae fans come out in droves for Reggae Sumfest, Jamaica’s world-famous, five-day music festival featuring top reggae performers from across the globe.
For rock-bottom rates on hotels and air, visit Montego Bay during low season. Spanning May to mid-June and late August to November, low season comes cheap, but not without a cost. It is the wet season, so there’s the chance of more rainfall, especially from September to October, as well as an increased risk of hurricanes, peaking from August to October. Still, there’s a bright side if you’re game to gamble on the weather. Rain showers are typically brief and effectively cooling, most hotels offer hurricane protection policies (not to mention the island is rarely touched by hurricanes), and festivals still color the scene, like June’s Jazz month and September’s Falmouth Blue Marlin Tournament, a local favorite. Note that hotels often undertake their improvement and expansion projects during low season, so ask before booking your trip, lest you awake to 6 a.m. construction
