Located in southwestern Arizona, the city of Yuma is an exciting mix of the old and the new. Yuma takes a lot of pride in its role as an iconic Wild West town, with lots of historic attractions and points of interest. Once, Yuma was one of the easiest crossing points in the Colorado River, which made it very popular with settlers heading west toward California. The river also supported healthy steamboat traffic, which increased its commercial appeal.

Today, that rich sense of history continues, but overlaid with a modern, upbeat, and artistic vibe that seems to promise new and wonderful discoveries around every corner. Whether you are in town for business, seek a history-filled family vacation, or simply want to spend a couple of weeks playing golf on some of the best courses around, Yuma in Arizona is ready to welcome you.

Where to Stay in Yuma, Arizona

Visitors to downtown Yuma will find it to be warm and welcoming. Fun shopping boutiques, bars, and a variety of restaurants wait to be explored. Everywhere you look, history is awaiting you. The city’s main street is the end of what was once known as the “Gila Trail,” which brought hopeful prospectors to California during the Gold Rush days. Main Street is the perfect place to find old-fashioned street fairs, walking tours, and various festivals of all varieties.

On the northern side of town near the Colorado River, the famous Yuma Territorial Prison is said to be haunted. The prison opened in 1875 and was home to over 3,000 inmates during its 33 years of operation. You can experience the haunting atmosphere of the prison cemetery, and see the actual cells that housed some of the southwest’s most hardened criminals. Should you prefer your historical explorations to be a bit less penal, the Arizona Historical Society Sanguinetti House Museum and Gardens is a great way to enjoy a charming 19th century adobe home while learning about the Merchant Prince of Yuma.

If you really want to travel back in time, the Castle Dome Mines and Ghost Town give you the opportunity to see all the original buildings from the 1800s that made up a once-thriving mining town. You can visit the Mercantile, various saloons, the doctor’s office, dress shop, and more, with many of the original items still on display.
