The Dominican Republic is home to several international airports and domestic airports, making travel plans a breeze. The Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), a privately owned airport in the tourist city of Punta Cana is the largest, servicing Dominican Republic flights from all over the world. Next is the Las Americas International Airport (SDQ) in the capital city of Santo Domingo. Other airports worthy of note include Cibao International (STI) in Santiago de los Caballeros, Gregorio Luperon International (POP) in Puerto Plata, and La Romana International (LRM), located near tourist hotspots and the Casa de Campo resort in the southeast. Taxi and shuttle transportations are available from their Dominican Republic flights to the nearest city, making travel fast and easy despite the hustle and bustle.

Dominican Republic Weather

The climate in the Dominican Republic, as with most of the Caribbean, is sunny and blue all year round with little change in temperature apart from in the mountains which cool considerably during winter. If you plan on coming between October and May, you may want to carry an umbrella as the rain can last several hours. All year round is peak season in the Dominican Republic except for the hurricane season, which is between June and November. As such, it is possible during this season to strike a bargain Dominican Republic flight and find low cost air tickets.

Getting Around the Dominican Republic

You have several choices when it comes to getting around the Dominican Republic. Air Santo Domingo offers cheap domestic Dominican Republic flights between all the airports. Trains are not available, so for the adventurous traveler the best choice are guaguas, the Dominican Republic's name for local buses. Caribe Tours offers bus services for longer journeys between Punta Cana, La Romana, and Santo Domingo. Cheap, frequent, and friendly, the guaguas are the main form of transportation and readily available from pretty much anywhere; however, they do stop at dusk and are often quite full. Taxis are plentiful but are not cheap and car rentals are not recommended as the roads and drivers can be troublesome.

Dominican Republic attractions

The best beaches are on the east side, while further inland you will find mountain ranges, rainforests, savannas, and waterfalls. The capital, Santo Domingo, is home to amazing architecture dating back hundreds of years. This enthralling country also has an illustrious history. You can still see the marks and cave paintings of the Taino and Caribe tribes, which are thousands of years old. Dominican Republic flights put you right in line for these attractions:

  • "National Park Isla Cabritos", one of the largest populations of American crocodiles
  • Santo Domingo, the oldest inhabited European settlement in the American—modern, bustling with excellent shopping
  • Punta Cana, white sand, buzzing nightlife, dolphin watching, and top notch resorts.
  • Jaragua, the largest national park in the Dominican Republic
  • Cayo Arena, a must for avid divers.
