Missoula and beyond: Three destinations by car

As you might expect from Yellowstone Country, exploring from Missoula is all about taking in that mountainous backdrop up close. Here are three of our favorite places to do just that.

Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness

Head out of the city to Rattlesnake National Wilderness for some of the best hiking trails in the state. Park up at the trailhead and take your pick of day hikes. Some gently follow the winding creek, while others take you steeply up into the park’s rocky peaks and alpine lakes. Activities also include fishing, cycling and camping.

Journey time: Around 15 minutes

Distance: Approximately 5 miles

Glacier National Park

It’s not the shortest drive to this spectacular destination – but it is a scenic one. And the soaring peaks, tumbling waterfalls and colorful meadows of Glacier National Park are more than worth the trip. We love driving the 50-mile Going-to-the-Sun-Road through the park, taking in everything from glacial lakes to cedar forests. Wildlife includes bears, wolves and mountain goats.

Journey time: Around 2 hours 30 minutes

Distance: Approximately 140 miles

Blackfoot Valley

Discover for yourself why this beautiful valley was the inspiration for the classic movie, A River Runs Through It. Drive out east from Missoula, and in under two hours you can be on the banks of this famous river. It’s a great place to fly-fish for trout while you soak up the scenery.
