Belize City is a colorful and chaotic Caribbean destination with everything from grand colonial mansions to a pretty man-made beach. Although the city itself is relatively compact, if you rent a car it can make a fascinating base for exploring the rainforests, coastline and Mayan ruins of stunning Belize.
Belize’s largest city is a diverse place, where the streets are alive with energy. Here are some of our favorite places to visit, all within easy driving distance wherever you’re based in the city.
Head into the heart of the city to see its impressive swing bridge, made far away in Liverpool, UK. The bridge spans Haulover Creek to connect the northern and southern halves of the city, lifting regularly to let boats and ships sail on up the Belize River.
North of the river, you’ll find the richest neighborhoods and the most upscale hotels. The Museum of Belize is housed within a restored former prison just off Queen Street, and the Maritime Museum is also well worth a look. Head to Fort Street Tourism Village for great shops and a waterfront stroll.
Drive south of the river to visit the city’s commercial district. Take in historic sites such as St. John’s Cathedral – said to be the oldest Anglican church in Central America – and the stately Government House. A couple of miles south is Old Belize Beach, complete with water slide, palm trees and beach bars.
